Entry & Skill Requirements
You don’t need any formal qualifications, however you’ll need to be reliably, have a positive attitude towards children and enjoy working with them. Related experience is preferable. You can get your NVQ qualifications in Playwork while you work. Before you start, you’ll need a DBS and background check.

What You'll Do
You’ll support children to follow their own ideas and interests for play. You’ll make sure their are safe, interesting and fun play opportunities to meet childrens‘ individual and group needs. You’ll also follow health and safety procedures and help children to be aware of their own safety and that of others. You will help children to develop their physical, social, emotional and creative skills through play.
What a typical day would look like:
- Providing and setting up play areas, materials and equipment
- Giving out refreshments
- Be responsible to children in case they have concerns or worries
- Dealing with injuries and emergencies
- Building relationships with parents, carers, and professionals
- You may be invited to join in activities like sports, drama, music, den building, cooking and creative games.
Working hours, patterns and environment
Most playwork is before and after school hours & during school holidays. You’ll be working indoors and outdoors, depending on the locations and the type of activity. You could be based in a breakfast club, after school club, mobile play bus, or holiday play scheme. Your work will usually be very active, and you’ll join in with games and sports when you’re invited to.
Career path and progression
With experience and our training, you can progress to lead your own settings as a manager. You can undertake a NVQ Level-3 in Playwork while working
Salary
- Starting from: £15,000
- Experienced: £20,000 (Play leaders)
If you work part-time, you will be paid pro-rata on an hourly basis.

What training do we provide?
One of your core benefits of being part of Cambridge Kids Club is the training opportunities we can offer to progress your career in playwork. This starts with your extensive inductions process which including training in Playwork, Child Protection (including Prevent), First Aid and Food Hygiene.
Once you have successfully completed your trial period you will be able to access our sweet of different training courses to develop your knowledge in playwork.
We also offer more structured training programmes in the form of the NVQ Level 3 in Playwork. This includes either classroom based tutorials or online courses with observation and based assessments.
We have also developed our own “Future Leadership Programme”. The aim of this programme is to develop play-workers to become future play-leaders, through a dedicated and specialised training plan, coupled with offering experienced senior team support and mentoring.
The FLP is expected to last between 12 – 18 months, with the end goal of having the skills and experience required from a play-leader or deputy play-leader.

We are always expanding and therefore we are looking for our next group of leaders.
You salary will depend very much on your experience, qualifications and role you fultil within the club. We often start playworkers on a lower wage and quickly progress them up through the ranges as they demonstrate their performance and commitment to playwork.
The pay cycle runs each calendar month, with your payday bing the 7th of each month.
You will be provided with a uniform consisting of polo tops. These must be worn at all times.
To go with your uniform, you should wear plain dark trousers or tracksuit bottoms and suitable footwear for running around.
The children go outside in all weathers, so you should ensure you are dressed appropriately.
All of our playworkers have a ‘home club’ which they attend for most of their shifts. This gives a sense of continuity for both the staff and children. We try not to move staff too frequently, but we do ask that all of our playworkers are flexible to move around any of our sites if necessary. If you are unable to move sites, please let us know at interview.
There are a variety of tasks that need to be completed during a session. Some include:
- Basic food preparation
- Setting up and running activities
- Interacting and playing with children
- Speaking to parents
- Tidying up and cleaning
